“The first duty of the supermarket cashier is to be friendly and provide excellent customer service.”
Excerpt from the The duties & responsibilities of a supermarket cashier
This sounds right to me, but reality is often much different. Being friendly and providing excellent customer service seems to be the last (mostly forgotten) duty for many supermarket cashiers I come across. An angry look and a grunted good-bye seem to be the norm. If I am lucky, I get a brisk greeting and a bored face expression. But there is an extraordinary cashier at a supermarket nearby. She greets each and every customers, takes the time to ask a questions or offer additional help while scanning the items at the register and wishes every customer a nice day. I saw her today and wondered once again what makes her run. What motivates her to be extraordinary in her job? After all, it’s exactly the same activity that the rest of her colleagues perform… Is it passion, conscientiousness, or simply caring? Whatever it is, we need more of it and not only in supermarkets!
